Project Description
See Stories led a two-week media arts workshop in Angoon in October 2022. We worked in partnership with Unangas Elder Barbara Shangin to document World War II stories of resilience and resistance. Key parnters in the workshop included Angoon School, KTOO Public Media, and Angoon Tribal Council.
Impact
The impact of this project in Angoon was deep, wide, and diverse. One specific example of impact on an individual is as follows. When Unangas elder Barbara Shangin shared her and her family’s personal story with youth in Angoon, there was one particular student who lit up. When the student had to decide on a topic for the film she would create, she decided to highlight Barbara’s journey. She connected the bombardment in Angoon to what Barbara’s family experienced with their internment at Killisnoo. Barbara and the student experienced a strong bond in that they had both experienced atrocity in their communities. This is an example of the type of connections that were formed between youth and elders through the Angoon Youth Media Arts workshop. The student’s film can be viewed at https://vimeo.com/772252694.
