Master Artist and Apprentice Grant in Traditional Native Arts

Alaska State Council on the Arts

Master Artist and Apprentice grants support and encourage the preservation and perpetuation of traditional Alaska Native art forms. An apprentice may apply for serious study with a recognized Master Artist in any traditional Alaska Native art form. The Council places the highest priority on apprenticeships in which an apprentice will be studying within his/her own cultural traditions, and the major part of the budget is assigned for the Master Artist’s fee.

Grant funds may be used for Master Artist fees, to partially offset the costs of raw materials to be used in the project, and to cover travel costs essential to the apprenticeship. An Apprentice may request a grant in any amount. However, grant amounts do not usually exceed $2,000. A grant recipient is not required to provide a cash or in- kind match.
