Identity Tapestry

Online

When attendees at the 2018 Alaska State Council on the Arts Statewide ConvergenceĀ passed by the How Are You Creative? table, they were invited to participate in a collaborative weaving installation. Designed by artist Mary March, the “Identity Tapestry” installation invites viewers to become a part of the work by choosing a piece of yarn and weaving it around narrative statements that they identify with, such asĀ I enjoy being a part of new cultures,Ā I have had a near-death experience,Ā I am a morning person,Ā I enjoy being out of my comfort zone,Ā I like to sing or play an instrument, andĀ I am a kid at heart.Ā The tapestry traveled to the First Friday booth in downtown Fairbanks, where community members, visitors, and First Friday go-ers could weave their own strand. The end result was a collective tapestry that visually represented those joining theĀ How are You CreativeĀ movement,Ā a visual group “self-portrait.
